Born in 1985 in Kobe, Hyogo, Japan. Graduated from Osaka University of Arts in 2008. NIROTAKA is an artist based in Tokyo.

Working primarily with acrylic paint, he depicts worlds in which humans, animals, plants, and strange creatures transform and merge into one another.
Centered on painting, his practice extends across media and formats, including drawing,
painted three-dimensional objects, skateboard decks, book illustrations, artwork for music and film projects, and live painting.
He began actively exhibiting his work around 2012. Alongside a series of solo exhibitions in Japan,
he has presented his work internationally, including participation in “HETA-UMA / MANGARO” in France,
“TRANCHÉE RACINE” at Halle Saint-Pierre in Paris,
and projects associated with The Hive Gallery in the United States.
In 2018, he participated in live painting at SUMMER SONIC’s “SONICART.”
In 2019, he created the cover artwork for the anthology Demo, Koboreta, featuring works by Kodama and others.
In 2022, he created the main visual for animator Luca Dipierro’s The Cadence: A Tale of Paper and Cloth,
continuing a practice that extends beyond the exhibition of paintings.

In 2026, he unified his artistic practice under the name “NIROTAKA” and began a new phase of his career,
developing new work and presentations from his base in Tokyo.

STYLE / WORK

NIROTAKA’s works feature humans, animals, plants, cities and nature, as well as strange creatures that resist conventional classification.

Rather than depicting these subjects as they appear in reality, he reconstructs them through bodily transformations,
the fusion of different organisms, dense ornamentation and repeating patterns, and vivid colors.
Human faces and bodies are sometimes overtaken by other organisms or plant forms, gradually blurring the boundary between what exists in reality and what belongs to the imagination.

Contrasting sensations—beauty and ugliness, cuteness and eeriness, humor and anxiety—coexist within the same image.
Alongside the visual pleasure created by vivid colors, bodily transformations and an overwhelming density of information leave the viewer with a subtle sense of discomfort and unease.

Underlying this is NIROTAKA’s own sense of “information / noise.”

-In this world, violent events and beautiful things always flow as noise to the head. Noisy information and anxiety in life mix together and become my paintings.-

In past international publications, his work has been described as combining dreams and fantasies with a relatively realistic style, giving rise to works characterized as “psychedelic” and “nihilistic.”

His works range from small-scale pieces to large paintings measuring up to Japanese size 100, with the density of detail varying considerably from one work to another.
In his most intricately rendered works, bold fields of color and strange silhouettes dominate when viewed from a distance,
while countless details and motifs emerge upon closer inspection, creating a multilayered visual field.
